“The essence of our organization is to engage the family, the community, and other stakeholders to develop lifelong learners.” These words of USec. Tonisito MC. Umali were unmistakably clear and resounding inside the Don Federico Mandapat Sports Complex as he spoke to the participants of the Brigada Eskwela Kick-Off of Region 1 on May 28. He reiterated, “Mali. Mali. Hindi po ninyo naipapatupad ang inyong tungkulin kung hindi po ninyo ito naisasagawa sa isang pamamaraan na ang inyong komunidad ay naisasama.”

The undersecretary was jolly but firm in stating the constitutional and legislative bases of his urgent entreaty specifically, RA 9155 and Article 14, Section 1 of the Constitution. “Itong ginagawa natin ay hindi tipong isang programa na naisip lamang. I want you to know that all of the things that we are doing are part of our core mandate.”

USec. Umali then tendered the injunction of Sec. Leonor Briones to the members of the department to expand cooperation with the private sector and communities and to intensify public and private partnerships in the fulfillment of DepEd’s Vision, Mission and Core Values. “You reach out so that the concept of public and private partnership is really alive in your schools,” he explained. Then he added, “Ikintal sa isipan ng komunidad na sila ay may pakialam, na tayong lahat ay may responsibilidad.”

The speaker might have given a vital appeal but he surely was glad in relaying that the objective in changing the mindset and framework of the stakeholders was indeed happening as implied by the annual increase of supporters, donors, and volunteers. He remarked that Region 1, and San Carlos City in particular, is capable and effective in establishing affectionate partnerships with the community.

“It’s all about legacy,” the undersecretary declared as his final point and proceeded to assure that the names of the participants would be remembered by their students, five or ten years from now, because of all these effective partnerships that they linked today.

The Kick-Off initiated the six-day Brigada Eskwela 2018 which would run through June 2 with the theme “Pagkakaisa para sa Handa, Ligtas, at Matatag na Paaralan Tungo sa Magandang Kinabukasan“.
